Title:- Basic Photo Editing in Adobe Photoshop - Graphic Design Learning Document Series #3

Hello everyone, this is the third video of my graphic design learning document series. As I mentioned in the previous video, I am going to discuss Photoshop in this video and a few more upcoming videos.

So, what is Adobe Photoshop? Adobe Photoshop is a raster graphic editor developed and published by Adobe. It was originally created in 1988 by Thomas and John Knoll. Since then the software has become the industry standard not only in raster graphic editing, but in a digital art as a whole.

Here we are going to niche down our discussion. For example let’s say for this particular video we take photo editing and divide it into seven sub niches - 1.  Basic Photo Editing, 2. Colour Correction, 3. Photo Enhancement, 4. Retouching, 5. Restoration, 6. Photo Composition, 7. Photo Manipulation. Now we go more in depth. We will take “Basic Photo Editing” and divide it into several micro niches.

Where did I get the knowledge of Basic Photo Editing? Recently I read a book called “Photo Editing Basic” by Margaret Brown. The link of the book is in the description below. This is a very short eBook. The book didn’t show how to do all that editing stuff.  It just mentioned those basic photo editing. But don’t worry I will show you how to do all those basic photo editing in Photoshop. I will create separate videos for separate editing methods and put them in a separate playlist very soon. But for now let me finish this document series first.

Though the book didn’t justice too much. I read it just to get the basic concepts about basic photo editing. We often do this kind of editing on our phone or on the computer using other easy photo editors. These editing are so basic and easy that almost all photo editing apps provide those options to do. You don’t need to learn powerful software like Photoshop to do basic photo editing. But this video is all about Photoshop. So we will limit our discussion only in Photoshop.
Also this is my first Photoshop video, so I start with the basics. In the next few videos we are going to discuss intermediate and more advanced photo editing.

For now let's talk about those basic photo editing one by one.

1. Cropping:- First one is cropping. Cropping involves trimming away unwanted portions of a digital photo. We often use this. The tool is usually shown by an icon that looks like a pair of scissors in the toolbar of Photoshop.
2. Resizing:- Number two is resizing. The main reason for resizing digital images is that different places have different requirements such as web, different social media, print media etc. Go to the menu bar -> file -> export in Photoshop. A dialogue box will pop up to resize and to control the quality of the image before exporting.
3. 4. 5. The next three in this list are brightness, contrast and colour adjustment. Even though a simplest image editor provides settings for fine tuning brightness, contrast and colour. However the range of adjustment is quite limited. In this case you require a more powerful software like Photoshop which supports a wide range of adjustment and advanced setting options.
6. Cloning:- The cloning tool, which is indicated with a rubber stamp icon, provides an easy fix for images containing elements you would like to remove in areas that can not be removed by cropping. It works by copying a selected area and replacing it in a new selection of the image.
7. Healing:- The healing brush which is often denoted by a Band-Aid icon, is used to correct imperfection in images. It works by sampling colours and textures in the area around the blemish and using the resulting brush to blend the blemish into the background.
8. Sharpening:- Most digital images can benefit from a little sharpening. The trick is to use the right amount. Over-c-sharpening can produce unattractive artefacts, which show up as speckling or outlines around edges in the image. Under-sharpening will leave images looking slightly soft.
9. Noise Reduction:- Noise reduction works by slightly blurring the image to subdue the grainy appearance of images with high noise levels. Unfortunately over-processing images will become unsharp.
10. Red- Eye Correction:- Photoshop provides a tool to remove the red-eye effect from flash shots. It provides a wide range of adjustments enabling users to adjust the pupil size and degree of darkening. You simply place the cursor over the res area and the software replaces it with a natural looking hue and tone, taking account of catchlights in the subject's eye.
11. Dynamic Range Adjustments:- Many cameras include dynamic range adjustments that endeavour to even out extreme differences between brightness levels in digital photos. The objecting of the processing is to compress wide brightness range in a subject into a range of tones (from blace to white) that can be printed.
So, those are some basic and most popular photo editing. The video is beyond the scope to show each method. It will become a much longer video. In future I will make separate videos and show how to do those editing and put them in a separate playlist. This is it for now, all about the basic photo editing. In the next video I will discuss colour correction. So please stay connected.
